The Cartmel executive are watering to maintain the good ground they provided on Saturday ahead of today’s eight-race card.

Donald McCain entered Presentandcounting (3.35) in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen on Saturday but did not declare his progressive novice at the overnight stage to wait for this four-runner contest against fellow novices.

I hope I am not tempting fate, but his jumping has been exemplary so far this season and I hope he has burnt off his three rivals by the time he has jumped the last and set off on the long run in. The 5/4 with William Hill on Sunday looked too big and he is into Evens with 10Bet.

Market rival No Comment has hinted at a return to his best over hurdles in recent starts, but he fell in his last couple of starts over the larger obstacles and he might not appreciate the return to fences. He has failed to win a race since January 2017 and has never truly fulfilled the promise he showed as a bumper horse given, he beat Monalee at the Punchestown Festival five years ago. If he is within five lengths of Presentandcounting coming over the last he will be tough to beat.

The Peter Bowen yard remain in terrific form and Lermoos Legend (4.10) should have the race run to suit in the extended 2m 1f chase given Tonto’s Spirit and Sword Of Fate look guaranteed to ensure a fast pace. The selection is 9lbs higher than when landing his hat-trick at Ffos Las last month, but he is improving at a rate of knots, and I will be disappointed if he didn’t go very close to continuing his winning streak. The selection is 5/2 with Boylesports.

My two against the field in the 3m 1f handicap chase are top-weights Licklighter and Empire De Maulde (4.45) with preference for the latter despite an 8lbs rise for a fluent success at Aintree last time. I hope all eight stand their ground as the 9/2 available with William Hill looks a fair each way price for a horse who first came to my attention when chasing home Captain Tom Cat back at Aintree over an inadequate trip on his penultimate start. Note there were two non runners on Monday morning and the ew recommendation is 4s with BetVictor – 2 places.

The form of Licklighter’s Perth success last month was given a boost when the second – Amalfi Doug – went one better this month. A 1lb rise looks very fair although this step up in trip is not certain to suit.

There is a valuable mile handicap at Ayr this afternoon and I hope to see Tinker Toy (3.20) bounce back after what was an underwhelming performance in a Grade 3 at Newmarket last time. His tapeta win over a mile at Newcastle on his penultimate start showed that today’s trip is well within his compass, and he has won three of his five career starts to date. The selection is 7/2 with MansionBet.

Sisterandbrother (5.35) looked ready for a step back up in trip when runner up over 10f at Salisbury last weekend and he gets the nod in the opener at Windsor this evening. Silvestre De Sousa keeps the ride for Mick Channon, and it might be worth noting that the selection has three entries for later in the week. The selection is 10/3 with 10Bet.
